Edward Farefax Rochester, Character Analysis
Edward Farefax Rochester is a very interesting character. He inherited his fortune when his father and older brother died. Mr. Rochester is seeking happiness in his life and to that extent he wants a wife. Mr. Rochester's first wife, Bertha Mason, was suggested to hi by his father and brother. He consented to the marriage after only seeing her a few times at parties and other social events. She turned out to be even madder than a hatter. Mr. Rochester spared her the horror of living in a mad house and kept her in a small apartment near the top of Thournfield. Mr. Rochester's second attempt at marriage was cut off by Mr. Mason because he had seen his sister only a few months before and new that Mr. Rochester's wife yet lived.
Mr. Rochester's third and final attempt at marriage and happiness was successful. His first mad wife was dead and he had Jane who would now agree to marry him knowing all conditions. Even though Thournfield Hall was burned to the ground and Ferndead was a poor substitute, what truly matters is who you spend your time with not where you spend it.
Mr. Rochester does have a temper that he exposes itself whenever he is vexed or angered. In the movie, Jane's lessons to Adele are interrupted by Mr. Rochester firing a gun. We do not know what he was aiming at but nothing ever came from it so it most probably wasn't a person.
